Belfast’s Countercurrent Collective is back with another immersive theatre experience you won’t want to miss! Their sold-out summertime production of Annie Baker’s “The Aliens” garnered stellar reviews from the Bangor Daily News and the Midcoast Villager. Now, the Midcoast’s most exciting new theatre company returns with Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation”, opening on Saturday, February 15th at the Waldo County YMCA.

“We’re really passionate about using unconventional performance spaces to draw the audience into the world of the play,” Producing Director Courtney Hayes said, “and the spot we’ve found at the Y is the perfect fit for this show.”

The play follows five small-town New Englanders whose lives intersect in hilarious and poignant ways when they enroll in a six-week “creative drama” class for adults, where seemingly trivial theatre games reveal deeper truths about love, trust, and loneliness. The show is directed by Countercurrent Artistic Director John Jurcheck, who says, “These characters are so finely drawn and just very relatable. Like all of us, they’re searching for meaning in their lives, and this class lets them express themselves in really surprising ways.” Jurcheck is no stranger to the setting; he offered his own six-week acting class in Belfast last year and plans to offer a play reading series after the show opens in February.

“Circle Mirror” marks the start of Countercurrent Collective’s second season of adventurous, thought-provoking theatre and dance. Hayes and Jurcheck continue to host Rhythm Sanctuary Belfast on the first Saturday of every month and they’ve launched a creative co-working and space for artistic expression and transformation called Studio 111 in the Belfast Opera House block and are currently looking for founding benefactors to support their many cultural offerings.

Community connection, sparking conversation, and spreading joy remain core values for these dedicated artists, and “Circle Mirror” checks all the boxes. “We’re thrilled to partner with the Y for this production. It’s a vital organization in our community, and we hope people will jump at the chance to experience it in a new and exciting way.”

The show features Jennifer DeJoy, Stefan Durham, Isabel Furko, Alan Gibson, and Courtney Hayes.

Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker opens Saturday, February 15th at 7pm. Performances run February 15th through March 14th, Friday and Saturday nights at 7pm, and Sundays at 2pm at the Waldo County YMCA, 157 Lincolnville Avenue in Belfast, Maine. Tickets are $35 and seating is limited. Facilitated discussion to follow every performance. Tickets and information are available at www.becountercurrent.com or call the box office at 720-496-3297.
